Crest & Ember is a fine casual dining restaurant. The brief: build a welcome email that converts first-visit guests into regulars. No reservation tool, no loyalty program — just a single email that needed to do real retention work.
Here's the email. Below that, a breakdown of every design decision that went into it.
The constraint: no discount, no gimmick
Most restaurant welcome emails lead with a discount — 10% off your next visit, a free dessert, something transactional. Crest & Ember didn't want that. Their positioning is elevated casual dining, and a coupon undercuts that brand signal.
So the email had to earn a return visit through experience, not incentive. That changes the entire design brief.
Decision 1: Editorial hero layout
We used a full-width editorial hero with a warm, food-forward image and a minimal copy overlay. The goal was to make the email feel like a magazine spread, not a marketing blast. Warm cream background (#f2efeb), serif headline, mocha accents — consistent with the restaurant's physical space.
Decision 2: Menu highlights as content, not product listings
Instead of a grid of menu items with prices, we picked two seasonal highlights and wrote them as editorial copy — short, descriptive, appetite-forward. This reads more like a food publication than a promotional email, which is exactly the brand tone.
Decision 3: Reservation CTA without urgency pressure
"Hospitality brands that push scarcity in welcome emails create anxiety in new guests — the exact opposite of what the brand is selling."
The CTA is a simple "Reserve a Table" button — no countdown, no "limited availability" pressure. A calm, confident CTA matches the experience they're selling.
Decision 4: Dark mode compatibility
Over 30% of email opens happen in dark mode. We tested the email in Apple Mail dark mode specifically — the hardest client to get right — and adjusted background colors and image handling to ensure the layout held up without the cream background inverting to dark.
The result
Production-ready HTML, delivered in 48 hours. Tested across Gmail, Outlook, Apple Mail, and mobile. You can see the full email live on our Crest & Ember case study page.
