Why Your Abandoned Cart Emails Aren't Working (And How to Fix Them)
The average cart abandonment rate is 70%. Most recovery emails only get 5% back. Here's how to get to 20%+.
The $18 Billion Problem
Every year, ecommerce brands lose an estimated $18 billion to abandoned carts. The average cart abandonment rate is 70.19% (Baymard Institute, 2025).
Most brands have some kind of abandoned cart email. But here's the thing — most of them are terrible.
The 5 Reasons Your Cart Emails Fail
1. You Only Send One Email
A single "you forgot something" email recovers about 5% of carts. A 3-email sequence recovers 15-25%.
The winning sequence:
- •Email 1 (1 hour): Simple reminder with cart contents
- •Email 2 (24 hours): Add social proof + small incentive (free shipping)
- •Email 3 (72 hours): Urgency + bigger incentive (10% off)
2. Your Timing Is Wrong
Sending the first email 24 hours later? Too late. The conversion window starts at 30 minutes and drops sharply after 4 hours.
Optimal timing:
- •Email 1: 1 hour after abandonment
- •Email 2: 24 hours
- •Email 3: 72 hours (or 48 hours for perishable/seasonal products)
3. No Product Images
Would you click "Complete your order" if you couldn't remember what you were buying? Your cart email needs to show the actual products — with images, names, and prices.
Use dynamic product blocks in Klaviyo or your ESP to pull cart contents automatically.
4. Weak Subject Lines
"You left something behind" is what every brand sends. Try these instead:
- •"Still thinking about the [Product Name]?"
- •"Your cart is expiring (and so is free shipping)"
- •"The [Product] you loved is selling fast"
- •First name personalization: "[Name], your [Product] is waiting"
5. No Mobile Optimization
67% of cart abandonment happens on mobile. If your recovery email doesn't look great on a phone, you're losing the majority of your potential recoveries.
Test on:
- •iPhone (Safari Mail + Gmail app)
- •Android (Gmail + Samsung Mail)
- •Screen widths: 320px, 375px, 414px
